Israel and Iran directly exchange military fire on each other's home territory — missile, drone, or air strike — at least once more between now and end 2027, beyond proxy-channel operations?
For 40 years Israel and Iran fought through proxies — Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Iraqi militias, Houthis. In April 2024 Iran struck Israeli territory directly for the first time with ~300 drones and missiles; Israel responded with a precision strike on Iranian radar. In October 2024 Iran launched ~180 ballistic missiles; Israel struck Iranian military and missile-production sites. In June 2025 Israel conducted sustained strikes on Iranian nuclear-related and command targets; Iran responded with large missile salvos. The ladder is now short, the precedent is set, and both sides have demonstrated capability to strike home soil. Any further proxy escalation, Hezbollah reconstitution event, or nuclear-program advancement is likely to trigger direct exchange rather than proxy-only response.
Where reality is heading
The movers, ranked by leverage
What would change our mind
- Iran publicly declares or demonstrates a new strike capability (hypersonic missile batch production, extended-range drone deployment, revised retaliation doctrine)
- Israel conducts a visible preparatory operation (destruction of Syrian or Iraqi IRGC facilities, assassination of senior Iranian military figure)
- Hezbollah or Houthi successfully strike Israeli territory with Iranian-origin precision weapon, triggering stated-public Israeli attribution to Iran
- Iran achieves a nuclear milestone (crossing 90% HEU, visible weaponization step) that Israel has publicly declared a red line
- US administration (post-2026 or 2028 election) brokers a visible de-escalation framework with both parties signing
- Iran's new administration pursues Khatami-era diplomatic opening with Europe and signals willingness to constrain nuclear program
- Netanyahu government falls and is replaced by a coalition more cautious on direct confrontation
- A single quiet year passes with no Iranian or Israeli military action on each other's soil and visible diplomatic communication channels
